ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Friday, March 15th, the Sonoma State baseball team returned home for a conference series against Cal Poly Pomona after fighting back for a series split two weekends ago with Cal State East Bay. Clear skies were in the forecast but heavy gusts out to all fields would set the stage for a high scoring affair at Seawolf Diamond. Both teams would combine for a whopping 8 home runs on the day but the Broncos would put up some crooked numbers in the 4th and 7th to take game one 17-3.
After giving up the opening run in the top of the third, SSU would answer with a solo shot from catcher
Chris Ortiz, his third of the season. Second year right hander
Caleb Davis would come in relief in the second inning but the home run fest would continue into the fourth as Cal Poly Pomona sent three long balls over in the inning to jump out to a 6-1 lead.
The Seawolves would have their turn in the fifth with back-to-back shots from
Garret Barto and
Daniel Monti. Barto has come along nicely for SSU, recording hits in his last five games and raising his average to .281 on the season. The Broncos would go on to hit three more homers in the final two innings though to seal the series opener 17-3. Monti finished 2-4 from the dish and Ortiz, Barto and Monti would finish with an RBI each with their solo home runs.
