Seawolves Battle Broncos but Drop Saturday’s Doubleheader, Series Finale Sunday at 11:00 AM

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Saturday, March 16th, the Sonoma State baseball team looked to bounce back with a doubleheader matchup against Cal Poly Pomona. The Seawolves offense was more active and had chances to grab their first lead of the series in both games but the Broncos would break out with big innings late in both games to sweep the doubleheader, 10-2 and 15-7.

GAME 1 SSU 2-10 CPP

The long ball was active again today with SSU connecting on three home runs. In game one, the Broncos would get four early runs off Sonoma State starter Blake Janowicz in the first three innings. Janowicz would settle down though with scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth and junior designated hitter Garret Barto would send a solo shot to deep left center to get the Seawolves on the board in the fourth inning. Barto extended his hit streak to 6 games and the solo shot would go down as his second of the series and third of the season.

In the 8th inning, junior outfielder Jared Esparza would take advantage of a pinch hit opportunity and slash an RBI double down the left field line. The Broncos maintained a 6-2 lead heading into the 9th and would hang on, adding four more runs in the 9th to take the game 10-2. The Seawolves did bounce back with 10 hits in the game but three errors would lead to costly runs throughout the game and help maintain CPP's lead. Barto surged his way to a 4-4 day with two runs and an RBI. He has climbed his average to .325 and a 1.000+ OPS on the season.

GAME 2 SSU 7-15 CPP

Sonoma State's Tanner Fonoti got the start in the 7-inning game of Saturday's doubleheader. Fonoti would fall behind early with two runs in the first but got some offensive support in the third with a 2-run bomb from Christopher Wright. Wright connected on his team leading 5th homer of the season and also leads the team with 17 RBI's.

The Broncos doubled their lead once again with RBI hits in the 5th inning but center fielder Kenny Decelle would come up with a 2-out RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to one. Decelle, off to a slow start this series, put together a stellar six pitch at bat before lining a ball to right center to score Lucas Townsend from second.

Fonoti had settled down nicely in the 4th and 5th inning but in the 6th, Cal Poly Pomona would load the bases and after walking in a run, Fonoti surrendered a momentous grand slam that broke the game wide open. The Broncos went on to score 8 runs in the inning and extend their lead to 12-3, en route to the doubleheader sweep. The Seawolves would make some noise in the 7th with a pinch hit RBI single from Bryson McArn followed by a 2-run homer from Joey Loveless, but they would eventually fall 15-7 after the final out. Loveless and Wright combined for four RBI's with a pair of 2-run home runs while six different players accounted for the team's six hits.
