ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The top two teams in the CCAA squared off in a doubleheader on Tuesday as Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay split the two games. The Seawolves took the series opener 5-1 behind a dominant pitching performance by
Bailee Reed before falling 4-0 in the nightcap. SSU moved to 17-10 overall and remained tied with the Pioneers at 10-6 at the top of the standings.
Sonoma State found themselves down early with the Pioneers plating an unearned run in the top of the 1
st off Reed. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 2
nd when
Lauren Mirtoni delivered her first homerun of the season with a blast to left. The Seawolves were back at it in the 3
rd, scoring two more runs to take a 3-1 advantage.
Carissa Marquez started the rally with a double before
Anna Zoia-Buescher singled to put two runners on. After Zoia-Buescher stole second, Nishimoto sent a single right back up the middle to score Marquez. Two batters later Mirtoni plated another run with a single of her own.
Reed did the rest from there, shutting down the Pioneers inning after inning and not allowing a hit from the 2
nd to the 6
th inning. SSU added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6
th after
Jasmine Moreno doubled and
Jocelyn Robles singled.
Danyelle Castillo then recorded a pinch hit, two-run double to right to score both runners and make it 5-1. Reed did the rest, closing out the game in the top of the 7
th.
Reed improved to 9-4 on the season with a four-hitter, allowing just one unearned run and striking out four. Mirtoni finished with two hits and two RBIs including a solo homerun.
The nightcap was all Pioneers as the visitors scored a run in the top of the 1
st once again to take an early lead. The unearned run came off starter
Nichole Sarra who kept the game tight. CSUEB added two more unearned runs in the 5
th to make it a 3-0 game while Marissa Quintero shutdown the Seawolves' bats. The Pioneers added one more in the 6
th to make the final score 4-0. Sarra went 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run and seven hits.
The Seawolves head to Arcata this weekend to take on Cal Poly Humboldt for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
