Seawolves Continue to Fight, Shutout Golden Eagles for Doubleheader Split

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. – On Friday, April 12th, the Sonoma State baseball team kicked off a massive weekend series with Cal State La who currently sit in the 6th spot in the conference standings. Just a game and a half back, the Seawolves have a huge opportunity to pick up some games on the Golden Eagles and make the gap even tighter down the home stretch of the regular season. Despite holding a 6-2 lead in game one, LA would storm back with a 6-run 7th inning and go on to win 8-7. SSU would get a terrific outing from left hander Ethan Glassman in game two though as he and Nik Kamages combined for the 9-inning shutout to give the Seawolves the 3-0 victory.

GAME ONE SSU 7-8 CSULA

Game one of the series got off to a quick start for SSU as Kenny Decelle belted his 3rd home run of the season. The winds were high and the weather was cold with rain hitting Sonoma County later in the evening but Decelle fired a low bullet over the left field fence to give Sonoma State an early 2-0 lead in the first.

Right hander Blake Janowicz made his team leading 9th start of the season and put together another quality outing, completing five innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits. Cal State LA would get on the scoreboard in fourth with a pair of runs but a sac fly from Niko Tejada in the bottom half and then a solo shot from Garret Barto the next inning would give SSU a 4-2 lead, putting Janowicz in line for the win.

The Seawolves weren't done as they singled four straight times in the sixth inning to eventually plate two more runs and grow their lead to 6-2. Christopher Wright would bounce a ball over the first baseman's head with the bases loaded to score Sean Pauly and Niko Tejada

Things would get messy in the seventh though as the Golden Eagles took advantage of two costly errors and recorded 6 runs on 5 hits to take an 8-6 lead in a blink of an eye. A 1-out single with runners on second and third would plate two runs to get the rally started and then LA would record three straight RBI hits to score four more in the inning.

SSU would get one back in the bottom half of the seventh as Daniel Monti trotted home on a passed ball to make it 8-7. LA would end the game in the ninth though with a 4-3 double play as the Golden Eagles second baseman would field a hard ground ball off the bat of Chris Ortiz and turn two himself to seal the one run victory. The Seawolves recorded 12 hits in the game but 4 errors would aid the comeback for the Golden Eagles. Decelle, Wright, Monti and Tejada all had two hits in the game for SSU.

GAME TWO SSU 3-0 CSULA

In game two of Friday's doubleheader, junior lefty Ethan Glassman would make his 3rd start of the season after some quality relief outings in recent weeks. Glassman was stellar in his 5 innings of work, allowing just 4 hits, a walk, no runs and 4 strikeouts. This game got off to a much slower start as both teams were held scoreless through the sixth inning.

SSU would get some bounces their way in the seventh as Lucas Townsend hustled home on a wild pitch to score the first run of the game. Then, Joey Loveless would tack on two more with a clutch 2-out single to score Shane Callison and Christopher Wright. He would bloop a ball into a right field triangle and extend the Seawolves lead to 3-0.

Nik Kamages would replace Glassman in the sixth inning and the three runs would prove to be more than enough as he was equally as dominant on the mound, allowing just 2 hits in his 4 innings to pickup his 4th win of the season. The move to the bullpen from head coach John Goelz has paid off in a big way as Kamages now leads the team with 4 wins, 3 saves and an ERA of 4.57.

Sonoma State climbs to 7th in the conference standings with their 3-0 win and sit just one game back of Cal State LA for the 6th spot.
