Seawolves Split on the First Day of the 2025 Season

IRVINE, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team opened their 2025 campaign with a split on the first day of the Concordia Kick-Off Classic.  The Seawolves opened with a tough loss to Biola, falling 2-0 in a game dominated by strong pitching performances before rebounding with a 12-hit performance in a 7-3 victory over Fort Lewis.

In the opening game, Seawolves' starter Charlie Johnson put forth a valiant effort in the circle, allowing just two runs, one earned on six hits over six innings of work. Johnson kept Biola's offense at bay for most of the game, but a late rally in the sixth inning proved to be the difference.

The game remained scoreless through five and a half innings, with both teams struggling to generate offense. Sonoma State threatened in the second inning when Jasmine Moreno singled and Kaiya Dickens was hit by a pitch, but they were unable to capitalize.

Biola finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. After an error and a single put runners on first and second, Makayla Jordan delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to give Biola the lead.

Offensively, the Seawolves managed four hits against Biola's Kayla Bousquette, who went the distance for the complete game shutout. Moreno and Taylor Rapp each collected two hits for Sonoma State.

The Seawolves picked with a convincing 7-3 win against Fort Lewis College in the nightcap.  SSU's offense came alive early and often, while the pitching duo of Alexis Camberos and Emily Hinchey kept the Skyhawks at bay.

Freshman Sophia Newcomb led the charge for Sonoma State, going 3-for-4 with a two-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning. Newcomb's stellar performance set the tone for the Seawolves' offensive onslaught, which saw the team rack up 12 hits over the course of the game.

Freshman Alexis Camberos earned the win in her collegiate debut, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out four batters. Fellow freshman Emily Hinchey also had a fantastic debut came in for relief, securing her first save with 2.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning and two more in the second, highlighted by Newcomb's inside-the-park homer. They continued to apply pressure, adding single runs in the third and fifth innings before plating two more in the sixth to seal the victory.

Iris Bejarano had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Lauren Mirtoni contributed two hits and scored a run. Amari Houston provided a spark off the bench with a triple and an RBI.

Fort Lewis College mounted a comeback attempt in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to narrow the gap to 4-3. However, Sonoma State's defense held firm, and the Seawolves' offense responded with three insurance runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach.

Sonoma State is back in action tomorrow with games against Hawaii Pacific at 11:00 am and Hawaii Hilo at 6:00 pm.
