Men’s Basketball Pulls Out Gritty Road Win Over Pioneers 63-61

HAYWARD, CALIF.- Sonoma State Men's Basketball pulled out their first win of the new year thanks to a gritty, defensive minded performance on the road. Behind a strong defensive effort and a trio of double digit scorers, the Seawolves picked up a key CCAA win that sets them up nicely for an upcoming homestand inside the Wolves Den!

Defense was the name of the game for coach Rich Shayewitz's squad while facing off against a familiar conference opponent. For the 40 minutes of game action, the Seawolves held the Pioneers to a 38% shooting percentage from the field thanks to an especially stifling first half where they only allowed a 32% field goal percentage. They also completely shut down the three point arc for the Pioneers who could only muster five made threes at a 19% clip. Lastly, on an individual defensive note, Julian Bryant came away with four blocks and a steal. Bryant has turned into the team's swiss-army knife. The senior forward has filled any variety of roles for his team be it as a scorer, rebounder and in tonight's instance, a defender.

On the offensive side of the court, Chris Holley put together arguably his best game as a Seawolf. Holley earned the starting nod and responded with a  stat sheet stuffing performance. He had 10 points while knocking down five of six shot attempts, handed out a game high five assists, pulled down a game high six boards and most importantly, only committed a single turnover.

Alongside Holley, fellow guard Nick Medieros has continued his breakout season as a scoring threat thanks to another 18 point outburst behind a 55% shooting percentage for the game. Not only is he up to a 13.2 scoring average for the season but he has reached double figures in scoring nine times across 11 appearances this season.

The team now turns their attention to a few days of preparation before their next two games inside the Wolves Den. January 9th will see the Golden Eagles of Cal State LA make the trip up to 1801 E Cotati Ave for a 7:30 PM tip-off!
