Seawolves Sweep Academy of Art in Home Opener

The Sonoma State softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art on Wednesday afternoon, taking the first game 6-3 and the nightcap 9-3.  The sweep improved the Seawolves' record to 5-2 on the season, including three straight wins.

SSU wasted no time, plating two runs in the first inning. Sophia Newcomb set the tone by taking one for the team, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. She promptly stole second before Lauren Mirtoni delivered a triple to right field, driving in Newcomb for the first run of the game. An Urban Knights passed ball allowed Mirtoni to score, giving Sonoma State an early 2-0 lead.

The Seawolves' bats stayed hot in the second inning, exploding for three more runs. Morgan Kingsbury kicked things off with a single, followed by Carissa Marquez's hit down the right-field line. Olivia Gabriel's perfectly executed bunt single brought Kingsbury home. Two wild pitches from Academy of Art's starter Kamielle Powell allowed both Marquez and Gabriel to score, with Mirtoni capping off the inning with her second RBI of the day on a single to right field.

Sonoma State added an insurance run in the fifth when Iris Bejarano walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and was driven in by Kaiya Dickens' triple to right-center field, extending the lead to 6-0.

Charlie Johnson was nearly untouchable in the circle for the Seawolves, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The Urban Knights finally broke through in the final frame, scoring three runs on their lone hit of the game, aided by a Sonoma State error. However, Johnson secured the complete-game victory with a strikeout and improved her record to 2-2 on the season.

The Seawolves' offense was led by Lauren Mirtoni, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, including a triple. Kaiya Dickens also contributed a triple and an RBI, while Olivia Gabriel added a hit and an RBI of her own.  Johnson allowed just the one hit and struck out three while inducing 15 ground ball outs.

After a slow start that saw the Urban Knights take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Seawolves' bats came alive in the second. Bejarano ignited the rally with a double to right field, followed by Morgan Kingsbury's single. Newcomb then delivered a clutch two-run single, putting Sonoma State ahead 2-1. Jasmine Moreno's bases-loaded walk extended the lead to 3-1 by the end of the inning.

The game-breaking moment came in the fourth inning when the Seawolves erupted for six runs. Lauren Mirtoni led off with a double, setting the stage for a relentless offensive onslaught. Kaiya Dickens, Bejarano, and Kayla Gonzalez each drove in runs, while Gabby Enyart contributed with a sacrifice fly. Newcomb capped off the inning with a two-run double, pushing the Seawolves' advantage to 9-2.

Ava Paquin earned the win for Sonoma State, improving her record to 2-0. Paquin pitched 4.1 solid innings, allowing just two runs - one earned - on four hits while striking out one. Emily Hinchey closed out the game with 1.2 perfect innings of relief, including one strikeout.

Offensively, the Seawolves were led by Newcomb, who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a crucial double. Bejarano had an impressive day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Mirtoni and Gonzalez also contributed two hits each to the team's 11-hit attack.

Sonoma State is back in action on Friday afternoon when they host Jessup at Santa Rosa Junior College for another doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm with live stream available on FloCollege.
