Clarke led his team to three conference victories, the first time since 2003 the Gaels had nine or more points in the conference season. The Gaels finished the campaign strong, winning three of their last four matches. In the season's home opener, the Gaels gave Clarke his 100th career coaching win with an impressive 2-0 win over nationally-ranked No. 12 California. SMC finished the season with wins over four top-50 teams in 2016. The Gaels defeated the Golden Bears, Portland, San Diego and LMU. The 3-0 win at Portland was the program's first victory at Merlo Field since 2001.
In his second season, Clarke placed 10 players on the WCC All-Academic teams. Hannah Diaz had one of the most impressive years in program history, as she was named WCC First Team and was named NSCAA D-I All-West Region Third Team. Diaz ended the year being named to the U-23 U.S. National Team in March. Saint Mary's landed their first All-West Coast Conference First-Team player in five years in Diaz during the 2015 season.
