ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Andrew Bailey scored just 46 seconds into the game to lead Sonoma State to a 1-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield in CCAA men's soccer action Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves improve to 2-3-0, 1-0-0 CCAA while the Roadrunners drop to 3-1-0, 0-1-0 CCAA.
Under a minute into the game, Sonoma State got a free kick from 30 yards outside the goal. Brett Cook sent a perfect pass in to Bailey who redirected it with his head past 'Runner goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski. It would be the only goal in the game as neither team was able to capitalize over the final 89 minutes.
Said Sonoma State head coach Marcus Ziemer, "It's sad in a way because this is the final game between SSU and Bakersfield as conference rivals (CSUB is heading to Division I next year). However, this was a huge win for us. Bakersfield is a very good team and they will beat a lot of teams this year."
Sonoma State was charged with 32 fouls compared to just 17 for CSUB. The 'Runners, however, held a 5-3 advantage in yellow cards in an up and down, physical battle.
Clark Rupp moved back in to the starting lineup and turned in his first shutout of the season. He had to make just one save as the SSU defense, highlighted by Brett Cook and Scott Preckwinkle, kept the Roadrunners from many on-goal opportunities.
Bailey's goal was the fifth fastest to start a game in school history. The school record is also by Bailey as he scored just thirteen seconds into a game against Cal State Monterey Bay in 2004.
Sonoma State will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Cal State L.A. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
