Men's Soccer Can't Find Net In 1-0 Loss To Toros

The Seawolves battled on Sunday, but came up a goal short
CARSON, Calif-  In a battle of two of the CCAA's premier sides, No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills got a late goal by Greg Piechota to beat No. 6 Sonoma State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Carson.  The teams went scoreless for nearly 83 minutes before the Toros found the game-winner.  The loss drops the Seawolves to 9-2-2, 4-1-2 CCAA.  The Toros improve to 11-1-1, 6-1-1 CCAA.

Sonoma's Ben Langwith had an excellent chance to put the Seawolves up late in the first half after slipping behind the Toro defense.  His shot, however, was denied by a one-handed diving save from Miguel Benitez.

In the 83rd minute, Marco Pulido dropped the ball off to Piechota 15 yards in front of Brook Johnson, the SSU keeper.  Piechota's blast was just high enough to tip off Johnson's finger tips, but just low enough to touch the bottom of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Though the Seawolves would turn up the pressure, Benitez and the Toro backs were able to keep the Seawolves at bay.

The Seawolves were out shot by the Toros 17-9 in the contest, including 9-3 in the second half.  Johnson made a season-high six saves in a fine goalkeeping performance.

The Seawolves will hope to get another shot at the Toros in the playoffs.  Last year, the teams met three times with the Seawolves winning in the regular season, the Toros in the CCAA Tournament, and a tie in the West Regional final (though SSU did advance on penalty kicks).

Sonoma State hosts Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next weekend.
