HILO, Hawaii- It takes most first-year players a while to get acclimated to the college game. That rule apparently doesn't apply to
Kiley Brown as the Sonoma State freshman from Novato scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo in the season opener for both clubs on Thursday in Hilo.
It is the third straight year that the Seawolves have opened up the season with a shutout win. They defeated Grand Canyon (2-0) in 2007 and Western Oregon (3-0) in 2006.
Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, "This was a very good win for us. Hilo is a good team."
After a slow first half in which neither team was able to generate many scoring opportunities, the Seawolves excelled in the second. Brown's first strike came just after the 67-minute mark as she gathered a loose ball in front of the net and scored. Her second goal was exactly seven minutes later as she beat a defender, then blasted a ball to the upper right corner.
"We came out kind of slow in the first half, but we played great in the second half," commented Oberkirch, "I think our strong conditioning really made the difference."
The Seawolves held a 12-8 shot advantage in the contest.
Courtney Grixti made three saves in goal to record the shutout.
The Seawolves will continue their Hawaiian road trip on Saturday against BYU-Hawaii.
