ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In their 2008 home opener, the Sonoma State women's soccer team scored more goals than they have at home in over a decade in a 7-0 rout of Western Oregon. The Seawolves stay perfect on the season at 4-0-0 while the Wolves drop to 2-1-0.
The last time the Seawolves scored seven goals in a home game was on October 7, 1997 when they blanked Cal State Hayward (now Cal State East Bay) by the same 7-0 score. The Seawolves have now scored 19 goals in four games this season, two more than they scored in 19 games in 2007.
Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, "I knew goals would come, but I didn't know they'd come this fast."
The Seawolves wasted little time on Thursday, welcoming the Wolves to Seawolf Field with a goal in the 14th minute by
Tracy Webster. Webster received a feed from
Brittany Peterson and slotted it home. The lead was doubled just three minutes later when
Lindsay Catton netted a long strike from the left shortly after a corner kick.
The fans wouldn't have to wait long for more fireworks as freshman
Taylor Edmonds netted her first goal of the season just three minutes later off a double assist by
Allison Kern and
Alexica Bosque. Webster scored her second goal of the game in the 28th minute, again off a
Brittany Peterson assist. Her score capped off a flurry of four goals in just over 13 minutes of play and pretty much ended any hopes of a Western Oregon comeback.
"We came out fast and strong. It was fun to watch," remarked Oberkirch.
Shortly before halftime,
Jaci Davey scored the first of her two goals on the day when she received a rebound off her own shot and beat the keeper.
Up 5-0 at the break, the Seawolves didn't let off the gas, tacking on another score just ten minutes into the second when
Brittany Finitz scored her second goal of the season off a beautiful pass into the box by
Megan Cunningham.
Davey's second goal of the game, with under a minute remaining, set the final score at 7-0.
The Seawolves dominated play throughout, emerging with a 21-2 shot advantage and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
Courtney Grixti and
Megan Foertsch split time in the net to combine for the shutout. The Seawolves have allowed just one goal all season long.
"I was a little concerned about a letdown after our trip to Hawaii. However, there was no letdown today and victories like this are a testament to our team's depth."
The Seawolves will try to keep it going on Sunday when they host Western Washington.
