CHICO, Calif- Chico State ended nearly five years of frustration against Sonoma State on Friday with a stunning 72-62 overtime win over the Seawolves at Acker Gym in Chico. The win snaps a nine-game losing streak at the hands of Sonoma as Chico goes to 5-8, 2-4 CCAA. The Seawolves miss out on a chance to go above .500 as they fall to 6-7, 2-4 CCAA.
After shooting over 54% in the first half and taking a 29-21 lead into the locker room, the Seawolves saw their offense screech to a halt as they shot just 33% in the second half and 14% (1-for-7) in the overtime period.
Trailing 53-51, Sonoma captured the lead at the 2:27 mark in the second half when
Steven Pratt was fouled on a successful layup. He was able to connect on the free throw to put the Seawolves up 54-53.
James Sandoval would nail a pair of free throws with 1:41 left to push the lead to three, but that's when Sonoma's night would take a turn for the worse. Chico's Andy Bocian nailed a miraculous three-pointer just under the one-minute mark to tie it up at 56.
The Seawolves had the ball with just seconds remaining, but Chico's Junior Russell was able to steal the ball from Pratt and send the game to overtime.
The Wildcats would not trail in the overtime period as they used an 8-0 run to spread things out on their way to a 16-6 advantage in the OT.
James Sandoval had 16 points and ten rebounds to earn his first double-double in a Seawolf uniform.
Curtis Harrison had 13 points and Pratt added ten.
Bocian, the top scorer in the conference, finished his night with 29 points and six rebounds.
The Seawolves will host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next weekend as they continue CCAA play.
