Seawolves Drop OT Heartbreaker To Broncos

Casey McRoberts connected on six three-pointers Saturday night
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  A Larry Gordon put back with one second left in overtime proved to be the difference on Saturday night as Cal Poly Pomona came from behind to defeat Sonoma State 77-76 at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves tried a hail mary inbounds pass, but they were not able to get a shot off as they fall to 7-8, 3-5 CCAA.  The Broncos improve to 8-5, 4-4 CCAA.

After the first ten minutes, even overtime looked like a pipe dream for the Broncos as Sonoma raced to a 31-10 lead.  The Seawolves were a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point land during their torrid start.

The Broncos slowly hacked into the lead, finally overtaking the Seawolves with 9:41 left in the second half, 51-50.  The lead would volley back and forth before the Broncos seemed to take control, up five with 1:49 left.  A pair of Keith Garner free throws, then a jumper by Garner, who was 5-for-5 from the field on the night, made it 64-63 with 1:28 left.

Nursing a one-point lead with the shot clock turned off, the Broncos turned the ball over as Casey McRoberts came up with the big steal. After a foul by Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State had a chance for the win in regulation, down one with Ben Washington stepping to the line for two foul shots, but the junior point guard could convert only one and the game went to overtime.

Cal Poly Pomona held on to a lead for much of the overtime period, going up 73-70 with 1:30 left before a McRoberts three, one of his six on the night, tied things up at 73.  After an Austin Swift layup gave the lead back to the Broncos (75-73), McRoberts came up big again with another three, giving Sonoma a 76-75 lead with 23 ticks remaining.

Milking the clock and waiting for a last shot opportunity, the Broncos found it when Swift took a mid-range jumper.  The shot was off, but Larry Gordon was there for the rebound.  He popped up and sank a layup, to give the Broncos a 77-76 lead with only one second remaining.  Sonoma would heave the ball down court, but they could not control it, ending the game.

McRoberts led the Seawolves with a career-high 23 poinots.  He was 7-for-12 from the field and 6-of-11 from long range.  Garner and James Sandoval also had 13 points apiece for the Seawolves.

Austin Swift led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting.  Gordon, one of the CCAA's premier scoring threats, was held to just eight points, though he did snag 11 rebounds and come up with the big basket when his team needed it.

The Seawolves will return to action next weekend when they travel to Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
