Women's Hoops Holds Off Cal Poly Pomona

Heidi Mertle grabbed nine rebounds in Saturday's win
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State women's basketball team made it a weekend sweep on Saturday with a 61-52 win over Cal Poly Pomona at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves are now 7-8, 3-5 CCAA while the Broncos drop to 9-8, 5-3 CCAA.

Just under three minutes into the game, the score was tied at two.  After a layup by Stephanie Barnes a half minute later, the Seawolves captured a lead they would not relinquish.  The Broncos kept the lead within single digits, and even used a 13-5 run midway through the first to pull within one before Sonoma finished the half with a 26-21 lead.

The Broncos would trail by just four at several points early in the second half, but the Seawolves refused to let up, displaying a stingy defense and solid ball control.

Sonoma had six players with at least seven points, led by Olivia Larkin, who came off the bench for a team-high 11.  Larkin also had eight rebounds on the night.  Heidi Mertle had perhaps her finest game of the season, coming within shouting distance of a triple-double with eight points, nine rebounds, and six assists.  Stephanie Barnes (nine points, seven rebounds) and Lauren Redfield (seven points, six rebounds) also contributed on both ends of the floor.

The Broncos got 12 points from Reyana Colson and Ally Smith and a game-high 13 rebounds from Stephisha Walton.

Sonoma State out shot the Broncos 38.5% to 35.7% and committed one more turnover, 12-11.

The Seawolves are back on the road next weekend when they head to the southland to take on Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
