No. 21 Cal State L.A. Nips Sonoma In Double OT

Tracy Webster scored her team-high fifth goal of the season on Sunday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Kastidi Robles scored the golden goal with just 92 seconds remaining in double overtime to lead No. 21 Cal State L.A. to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Sonoma State on an overcast and drizzly Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  The Golden Eagles improve to 11-2-2, 8-2-2 CCAA while the Seawolves fall to 5-7-2, 3-5-2 CCAA.

It was the seventh time this season that the Seawolves have lost by a single goal.

Despite the defeat, Sonoma head coach Luke Oberkirch managed to stay upbeat, "This was a great advertisement for women's college soccer today.  Two good teams going at it with a fantastic crowd.  I'm very proud of our entire team...our defense went head to head with the best attacking team in the region and it took on OT goal to beat us."

Coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sonoma State wasted little time on Sunday, scoring a goal on their first trip down the field.  After a Kiley Brown cross drew out the CSULA goalkeeper, Tracy Webster was able to sneak into the box and get just enough on the ball to dribble it into the net.

The goal, which came just 51 seconds in, is the third quickest goal to start a game in the program's history.

Though they wouldn't score again in the first half, the Seawolves definitely held their own against the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles for the first 45 minutes.

Just six minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to draw level when Ann Marie Tangorra found a loose ball in the box and left-footed it to the left side of the net.

The score would remain tied 1-1 throughout the remainder of regulation and through the first overtime period.

Cal State L.A. put some scares into the Seawolf faithful in overtime, but freshman goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua made several outstanding saves to keep things even.

Oberkirch was particularly impressed with the play of Sciacqua, stating "Alexis was incredible in goal today."

Under two minutes away from earning a draw, the Seawolves' defense finally relented. Liz Franco sent a ball to Robles, who raced toward the goal, just to the right of center.  Able to just turn the corner on a Sonoma defender, she fired a shot that crossed in front of Sciacqua and kissed the left side of the net.

The Golden Eagles would lead in shots, 19-13, though most of that margin came in overtime, when they out shot the Seawolves 8-3.  CSULA had a healthy advantage in corners (8-1) and a slight edge in fouls (12-9).

As a final note, Oberkirch wanted to thank the local community, campus groups, clubs, and greek organizations who helped give the Seawolves their highest attendance figure of the season, "They created a great environment for both teams."

The Seawolves will now head out on the road for their next five games, starting next Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.  Their final home game of the season will be on November 1st, when they host Humboldt State.
