SEASIDE, Calif- Despite a 11-1 shot advantage by Sonoma State in the second half, including eight attempts on goal, the Seawolves were unable to make up for two goals scored by Cal State Monterey Bay in the first 12 minutes of the match as the Seawolves, ranked first in the west region and seventh in the nation, fell 2-0 to the Otters in men's soccer action at the Otter Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
The loss puts Sonoma State at 11-2-2 overall and 8-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State Monterey Bay moves to 4-8-3 (3-5-3 CCAA).
"(CSU Monterey Bay) is a tough place to play and they came out and fought hard," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We should be used to the fact that we are going to get every team's best effort. Our conference is so tough. If you aren't ready to play then anybody can beat you."
The Otters drew a foul on Sonoma State in the goal box, giving way to Cal State Monterey Bay's Nate Torricelli to convert a penalty kick at 7:22 to put the Otters up 1-0. Less than four minutes later, CSUMB's Grant Robson placed a perfect cross in front of Eric Alsop who headed the ball past Sonoma State goalkeeper
Brook Johnson, giving the Otters a comfortable 2-0 lead, just 11:01 into the match.
Cal State Monterey Bay then continued to put the pressure on Sonoma State throughout the first half, taking a 7-4 shot advantage into halftime, but the Seawolves picked up the pace on offense and regaining momentum going into the second half of play.
Sonoma State had several huge chances to get back into the match, taking the aforementioned 11 shots, but Otter netminder Brenden Baca made six huge saves, keeping the prolific Seawolves offense off the scoreboard.
Trevor Hurst led the Seawolves with four shots on the afternoon, two of which were saved by Baca.
Ryan Hall made a header attempt off of a
Cam Vickers corner kick that went just wide -- one of his three shots on the afternoon.
Jomed Tejan and
Casey Bernard added two shots for the Seawolves as well.
"We dominated the last 70 minutes (of the match) and had a lot of chances but we couldn't get one to drop," said Ziemer. "I was worried about a let down after the huge win over (Cal State L.A.) last Sunday. We warned the guys about the possibility of this and thought that we would be ready for Monterey Bay. Now, we just need to regroup and get back on the winning track."
Sonoma State will get that chance to regroup at San Francisco State on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in San Francisco.
