SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- With goals from
Trevor Hurst and
Taylor Jones, along with a dominating second half performance, the seventh-ranked Sonoma State men's soccer team bounced back from Friday's tough loss with a 2-1 road win over San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves, ranked first in the NCAA West Region rankings, improve to 12-2-2, 9-2-1 CCAA. The Gators drop to 5-8-3, 2-7-3 CCAA.
Sonoma State got on the board in the ninth minute when Hurst scored off a corner kick from
Cam Vickers via
Ryan Hall.
Said head coach
Marcus Ziemer, "We were ready to play at the first whistle today. We had several chances to score before Hurst finally headed one past hte keeper."
Their lead would be short-lived, however, as the Gators' Wes Whitt and Spencer Schwandt pieced together a goal in the 19th minute.
The teams would enter the break tied at one and nearly even in shots. The second half, however, would be much more one-sided.
The Seawolves would hold a commanding 15-2 lead in shots in the second half, but the game-winning goal didn't appear until the 79th minute when Jones connected on a
Stuart Gallant free kick that found its way through
Ben Langwith as well.
Said Ziemer, "We controlled most of the game by keeping the ball, but SF State fought hard to the end. Our depth really paid off today. We mixed up the lineup and got solid contributions from
Alan Grady and Langwith in the midfield.
Ricardo Sandoval also played great in the back."
The Seawolves led in shots 23-9 and had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. They were also out-fouled by the Gators, 16-9.
Next up for the Seawolves will be a tough Northern California road trip that winds through Chico State (Friday) and Cal State Stanislaus (Sunday).
"We need to have a good week of training to prepare for Chico on Friday," remarked Ziemer. "The guys are really excited."
