SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Nicole Vanni found the game-winning goal just eight minutes short of regulation on Sunday afternoon to lead a surging San Francisco State side to a 2-1 victory over Sonoma State. The Seawolves got a goal from
Lindsay Catton, but it would not be enough to prevent them from falling to 6-8-2, 4-6-2 CCAA. The Gators, now undefeated in the last five matches, improve to 7-6-3, 5-5-2 CCAA.
The Seawolves got off to a slow start in the first half, managing just one shot against a staunch Gator defense. SF State got off five shots, though none of them would sneak past Sonoma goalkeeper
Alexis Sciacqua and the teams entered the break in a 0-0 deadlock.
Sonoma State had several promising opportunities early in the second half, but it would be SF State breaking through first when Kara Cunningham found net in the 65th minute.
The Seawolves did not waste any time drawing even as senior
Lindsay Catton put one in the next from about ten yards out just 30 seconds later.
With just nine minutes remaining in regulation, Vanni, who also assisted on the Gators' first goal, scored what would turn out to be the game-winner.
The Seawolves had two chances in the final eight minutes, but shots by
Megan Cunningham and
Macy Usher came up empty.
SF State held a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots. Cunningham of Sonoma led all individuals with five. There was a distinct difference in fouls (SF State 16-5), though the game's only yellow card was shown to the Seawolves.
The win by SF State salvages a season split for the Gators as Sonoma State won the earlier meeting, 3-2 in double overtime up in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves will try to regroup next Friday when they travel north to take on North Division leader Chico State.
