LA JOLLA, Calif- The Sonoma State women's soccer team extended their misfortune on the road on Friday, losing to UC San Diego 1-0 on an own goal in the first half. The loss sends the Seawolves to 4-5-2, 2-3-2 CCAA. Despite being unbeaten at home (4-0-2), the Seawolves are now 0-5-0 on the road with all the defeats coming by a single goal. The Tritons improve to 8-2-0, 5-2-0 CCAA.
Despite the loss, head coach Luke Oberkirch remained upbeat, "It was a great game tonight and we played very well. Hopefully we can take away the positives from this game and continue to get performances like this."
The game's lone goal came in the 44th minute when a free kick by UCSD was accidentally headed into the Sonoma State goal by a Seawolf. That strike would account for all of the game's offense, though the teams would combine for 20 shots (11 for UCSD, nine for Sonoma).
Ashley Martin led the Seawolves with three shots attempted.
Tracy Webster and
Sara Studer pitched in with two apiece.
Freshman
Alexis Sciacqua got the start in goal for Sonoma and made two saves. Kristin Armstrong of UCSD also made two saves en route to the shutout.
The teams would combine for just four corner kicks and only 13 fouls in total.
The Seawolves will look to rebound on Sunday when they travel to Hayward to take on conference newcomer Cal State East Bay.
