Seawolves Hold On For 2-1 Victory Over Warriors

Sara Studer helped the Seawolves to victory on Sunday.
TURLOCK, Calif- Sophomore Katie Parucha scored in the 15th minute and freshman Sara Studer added an insurance goal 60 minutes later as Sonoma State was able to hold off a late surge by Cal State Stanislaus in the final minutes, including a goal with just 6:37 remaining in the match, to defeat the Warriors, 2-1, at Warrior Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Sonoma State, who is looking to avoid a sub-.500 season for the first time since 1986, improved to 7-8-3 (5-6-3 CCAA) with two matches remaining on its schedule. Cal State Stanislaus fell to 8-9-1 (4-9-1 CCAA).

Parucha gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead at 14:27 when she placed a shot to the right of Warriors goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz and into the net after receiving a pass from junior Allison Kern. Sonoma State outshot Stanislaus in the first half, 8-5, as Seawolf netminder Alexis Sciacqua made her only save just 4:36 into the match.

In the second half, Studer added the much needed insurance goal at 74:19 to put the Seawolves up 2-0 after sophomore Marissa Shaw's shot off the crossbar found Studer's feet as she fired it into the net.

The Warriors made things interesting down the stretch as Danielle Lovato scored her first collegiate goal in the 84th minute to narrow the Seawolves' lead to 2-1 but that would be as close as they would get.

Parucha led the offensive charge for Sonoma State with four shots -- three of them came in the first 16 minutes -- and Sciacqua made the one aforementioned save early on. The Seawolves outshot the Warriors, 15-12. Five of Stanislaus' players had at least two shots. Sitarz made five stops for CSUS.

It was the 12th match for the Seawolves this season decided by one goal -- Sonoma State is now 4-8-0 in those matches.

Sonoma State will conclude its 2009 season next weekend with a pair of matches against its travel partner, Humboldt State. The Seawolves will travel to Arcata on Friday (7 p.m.) before returning home to wrap up the season on Sunday (2 p.m.) for Senior Day. Two seniors -- Lindsay Catton and Tracy Webster -- will play in their final collegiate soccer match and will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
