HAYWARD, Calif- Sonoma State junior
Taylor Jones scored the go-ahead goal and an insurance goal, both in the second half, to lead the Seawolves in a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action at Pioneer Field.
Sonoma State, ranked No. 7 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association poll, remains unbeaten at 10-0-2 this season and 7-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State East Bay, the newest members of the conference this season, remains winless in the CCAA at 0-8-0 and 1-11-0 overall.
The Pioneers wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard as Alex Dickerson fired a shot from about 15 yards out on the right side of the goal box that beat SSU goalkeeper
Brook Johnson to the net just 4:53 into the match.
"We came out a little sluggish and they jumped on us and got the early goal," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said.
Junior
David Holleran then countered right back just under 10 minutes later, heading in a ball off the foot of sophomore
Cam Vickers to knot the match at one.
The first half was more of a defensive battle than anything, despite the two goals scored. Sonoma State had the slight advantage in shots, firing off only five shots to the Pioneers' three.
Then, at 60:53, freshman
Frank Becerril served a corner kick into the box where Jones was there to net the go-ahead score at 2-1 in favor of the Seawolves. Jones wasn't finished. The goalkeeper turned forward in the offseason, headed in a pass from freshman Erick Delgado-Solorio for the 3-1 lead and eventual final score.
"Taylor played really well," Ziemer explained. "It is hard to believe that he is a converted goalkeeper."
The Seawolves took the upper hand in shots, 13-6, and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks Sunday afternoon. Junior
Ben Langwith and sophomore
Trevor Hurst led the team in shots with three apiece and Johnson made two saves between the posts.
For Cal State East Bay, Sean Lynum-Young had two of the Pioneers' six shots. Billy Morales made three saves.
"Cal State East Bay is definitely better than their record," Ziemer added. "They worked very hard and were tough to play against."
Sonoma State will return home on Friday to kickoff a tough weekend series at the Seawolf Soccer Field, beginning with Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4 p.m. Then, the Seawolves will welcome second-ranked Cal State L.A. on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match featuring two of the most powerful soccer programs on the west coast.
