Men's Soccer Ties With Humboldt State Again

The Sonoma State seniors and their families prior to Sunday's game.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Despite a 23-5 advantage in shots taken, the Sonoma State men's soccer team came up empty and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park.  The draw brings to a close the Seawolves' regular season at 13-3-4, 10-3-3 CCAA.  They will open up the post-season next Friday.  The Lumberjacks see their 2009 season conclude with a record of 6-10-4, 5-8-3 CCAA.

The Seawolves will open up defense of their 2008 CCAA Championship on Friday in Turlock at the 2009 CCAA Championship Tournament.  With 33 points earned in league play, the Seawolves will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on Cal State L.A., the tournament's No. 1 seed in the 7:00 pm game.  Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills will meet in the other semifinal.

As the shot chart would indicate, the Seawolves controlled play throughout on Sunday, but a staunch Humboldt State defensive unit kept the tie in tact.

"We played very well today and generated a lot of chances, but we just couldn't score," said head coach Marcus Ziemer.

Sonoma State had seven shots in the first half and eight more in the second, but their scoring opportunities were really held to just a handful of promising situations and Humboldt's goalkeeper, Kyle Verle, needed to make just four saves in the first 90 minutes.

The Seawolves turned up the pressure in the overtime periods, especially in the second, when they peppered the Lumberjack defense with six shots in ten minutes.  However, each attempt was denied by the Lumberjacks, leaving the afternoon one of frustration for the Seawolves.

It was the second tie with Humboldt State in just three days as they teams played to a 1-1 final up in Arcata on Friday evening.

The Seawolves spread their shots around with junior Brandon Dela Cruz attempting the most at four.  Ben Langwith took three shots and a half dozen Seawolves attempted two.

Josh Suggs led the Seawolves with two shots attempted.

Sonoma State's Brook Johnson made one save in goal to earn his school-record 31st career shutout.  He has seven shutouts this season.

Verle ended the match with seven saves for the Lumberjacks.

"We would have loved to send the six seniors (Brook Johnson, Stuart Gallant, Casey Dayton, Alan Grady, Jeff Loesche and Ben Langwith) into the postseason with a win, but although we dominated the entire game we couldn't put the Jacks away," said Ziemer.  "These seniors have given a lot for this program and all of the players and coaches want to keep this season going as long as possible for them!"

Ziemer concluded by saying, "Now the real season begins.  We want to defend our CCAA title."
