Women's Hoops Falls Just Short To Cal State L.A.

ROHNERT PARK- Lauren Redfield's potential game-winning three point shot rimmed out for Sonoma State, as Cal State L.A. hung on for a 45-43 victory Friday night at Seawolf Gym. The Seawolves regular season ends at 9-18, 5-15 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles close out at 5-22 overall, 4-16 in CCAA action.

Both teams struggled offensively to find any rhythm in the first half, with Cal State L.A. shooting 21.9% and Sonoma State managing 17.6% from the field.

The Seawolves largest lead in the first was the result of an Olivia Larkin jumper with 10:42 remaining, giving Sonoma a 14-9 advantage. The Golden Eagles closed the gap with a 10-6 run capped off by a lay up by Amber Whittington.

In the final half, neither team was able to pull away, as both squads each held leads off five points. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the game, when Shatori Dearman nailed both of her free-throw attempts to give Cal State L.A. a 41-36 lead.

The Seawolves responded with a 6-0 run over the next four minutes, going ahead 42-41 with 3:11 remaining on a Stephanie Barnes jumper. The Golden Eagles pulled ahead 43-42 when Cassie Suffolk nailed the go-ahead basket.

After Sonoma's Redfield hit one of two from the line to tie the game at 43-43, Cal State L.A. used a block shot by Whittington to facilitate a fast break lay up for Jazzi Johnson, giving the Golden Eagles the decisive 45-43 advantage.

Leading the way for the Seawolves was Jennifer Russo, who posted twelve points, a steal and one assist. Olivia Larkin tallied eight points, and Redfield chipped in five.

Two Golden Eagles were in double figures, with Whittington pacing Cal State L.A. with fourteen, and Dearman notching eleven points.
