ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men's tennis team concluded their 2009 campaign Friday afternoon at Seawolf Courts, losing a thrilling 5-4 match to UC San Diego. Sonoma finishes the regular season at 8-11, while the Tritons improve to 11-10 overall.
In doubles play, the Seawolves look poised for the upset, taking two of three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead. The No. 1 team of
Connor Olson and
Jordan Smith downed the Tritons Kazumi Negishi and Erik Elliot 9-6. Sonoma scored their second doubles point when
Jeremy Heckley and
Zel Sperry outlasted Vincent Nguyen and Brandon Stevenson 9-8.
Needing only a split in singles play, the Seawolves could not parlay their doubles success into three singles victories. UC San Diego rose to the occasion and took four of six singles matches to edge out Sonoma State 5-4.
Connor Olson and
Zel Sperry were double winners on the day, as Olson defeated Negishi (6-3, 6-4) and Sperry dispatched Nguyen (6-4, 6-4).
