Seawolves Play To Scoreless Draw At Stanford

Senior goalkeeper Brook Johnson made six saves in Thursday's game
STANFORD, Calif- Despite several scoring opportunities for both teams, the defense prevailed as Sonoma State battled to a scoreless draw with Division I Stanford in an exhibition matchup Thursday at Stanford.

"We batted all day long," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "We had a chance to come away with the victory at the end but couldn't convert. Our defense was very solid for us today."

On the last play of the match, David Holleran fired a shot that barely cleared the crossbar, one of only four Sonoma State shots allowed by Stanford all match long.

The Seawolves played on the defensive side of the ball for most of the match as the Cardinal fired 23 shots (13 in the second half) and set up six corner kicks, all of which came in the final 45 minutes of play. Sonoma State starting goalkeeper Brook Johnson saw all 90 minutes between the posts and made six critical saves in preserving the 0-0 deadlock.

Holleran, Alan Grady, Cam Vickers and Trevor Hurst accounted for all four SSU shots, including one on goal by Hurst -- Stanford's backup netminder Galen Perkins made the save.

"We weren't as sharp on ball possession today but our guys gave a great effort against a quality opponant like Stanford," Ziemer added. "It was a great result."

Sonoma State will continue its exhibition schedule on Saturday when the Seawolves host Lewis (Ill.) University at 5 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
