Macy Usher scored two goals within just 1:27 to help Sonoma State roll to a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Hawaii-Hilo in non-conference action at the Seawolf Soccer Field. It was the regular season opener for the Seawolves.
Usher's goals came in the 58th and 59th minutes, both headed into the net via several cross passes by sophomore
Taylor Edmonds, freshman
Sara Studer and senior
Lindsay Catton. Each were credited with an assist in the match.
Catton, who assisted on the third goal of the afternoon, got Sonoma State onto the scoreboard in the first half after blasting a shot from 35 yards out to beat Vulcan goalkeeper Shanna Brown to the upper right corner of the net. She had a game-high six shots in the victory. Brown made seven saves for Hawaii-Hilo.
The Seawolves dominated from start to finish, firing 12 shots before halftime and adding 13 in the second half. The Sonoma State defense only allowed four shots (two on goal) and the Seawolves starting netminder
Courtney Grixti made two stops between the posts, marking her first shutout of the season.
Twelve Sonoma State players attempted a shot in the match, including Catton's six,
Jaci Davey's and
Tracy Webster's three shots apiece.
Sonoma State will take on Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. before heading on a two-game Pacific Northwest road trip to Saint Martin's (Sept. 5) and Western Washington (Sept. 7).
