BELLINGHAM, Wash-
Ben Langwith scored the game-winner nearly six minutes in to double overtime on Saturday night to give 17th-ranked Sonoma State an opening day 2-1 win over Western Washington at Orca Field in Bellingham. The reigning CCAA champions begin their 2009 campaign with a 1-0-0 record. The Vikings start out 0-1-0.
"This was a great win against a team that is going to win a lot of games this season," said Sonoma head coach
Marcus Ziemer.
Despite being out shot 20-13 overall for the game, it would be the Seawolves that broke into the score column first when sophomore
Cam Vickers scored on an assist from junior
Brandon Dela Cruz. That would constitute all the offense for either team in the first half as the Seawolves went in to the locker room up 1-0.
"The scorekeeper may have had them outshooting us, but we definitely had the better chances," said Ziemer. "We hit the post and had one saved off the line."
In the second half, the Vikings finally found their answer when Oscar Jimenez blasted one past Sonoma keeper
Brook Johnson from the top of the box. Johnson would be peppered with shots all night, but the All-American shielded the net with 11 saves in total.
Said Ziemer, "Brook came up big down the stretch, saving a 1v1 in the second overtime."
The teams finished the second half in a deadlock, then went through one ten minute overtime before the Seawolves found the game-winner. It came in the 106th minute when sophomore
Ebby Lombardi fed Langwith for a fast break. Langwith nailed a shot from 18 yards that found net and sent the Seawolves into the victory column.
The Seawolves will go for a sweep of the Pacific Northwest trip on Monday when they take on Seattle Pacific.
"We've got a day to recover," remarked Ziemer, "but we'll be ready for SPU."
