Men's Soccer Finishes Trip With 0-0 Tie At SPU

Brook Johnson and the Sonoma defense shut out the Falcons on Monday
SEATTLE, Wash-  Despite a healthy advantage in shots and several outstanding scoring opportunities, the Sonoma State men's soccer team had to settle for a scoreless draw with Seattle Pacific on Monday afternoon at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.  The 17th-ranked Seawolves go to 1-0-1 on the season while the Falcons also see their record move to 1-0-1.

"If you'd have told me before we left that we'd come home with four points (a win and a tie), I'd have been pleased," said head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "But we're a little frustrated we didn't get a win today after having such great opportunities."

Those opportunities came in the form of a header off the post, a shot by freshman Jomed Tejan that went just wide, and a great save by SPU keeper Kaleb Kuehn on a fine attempt from behind the defense by freshman Casey Bernard.  The Seawolves out shot the Falcons 18-5 in the match and held their opponents to just three shots in the first 100 minutes of action.

The Seawolves held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks and a 17-11 lead in fouls committed.

Brook Johnson
Senior goalkeeper Brook Johnson needed to make just one save, but it was a big one, in the second overtime that preserved the tie.

In earning the shutout, Johnson passed Dave Kaufman to become Sonoma State's all-time leader with 25 career shutouts.

"The defense came up huge today, especially our four starters in the backfield- Ryan Hall, Ebby Lombardi, Casey Dayton, and Stuart Gallant," said Ziemer.  "We battled hard all day, but we just didn't get the result we felt we deserved."

The Seawolves will hit the pitch next on Friday when they host Grand Canyon as part of the Seawolf Classic.  UC San Diego and Notre Dame de Namur will also be on campus as part of the two-day event (Friday and Sunday).
