ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State junior goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti made a huge save in the 104th minute to preserve a scoreless tie between the Seawolves and Chico State on Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Both teams went to 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
It was purely a defensive game throughout the afternoon, especially in the first half where only three shots were attempted by both teams. The pace picked up, however, in the second half as Sonoma State outshot Chico State, 5-4, after the intermission but neither team found the net, forcing overtime, despite five consecutive corner kicks by the Wildcats within a two minute span.
In the two extra periods, the Wildcats held the slight advantage in the shot department, 6-5, including the shot by Chico State's Ali Sward at 103:19 that was fired from about 20 yards out. In the second overtime, the teams traded possessions often as each team had great looks at finding the net for the win but Grixti and the Wildcats' Natalie Bensky came up big for their teams in the match in forcing the double-overtime tie and a shutout for each. Grixti made seven saves for the Seawolves and Bensky had four stops for the Wildcats.
On offense, sophomore
Katie Parucha came off the bench to add three shots and several others had two shots as Sonoma State led the match, 12-11, in shots. Sward had four shot attempts for Chico State.
Sonoma State will hit the road next weekend to take on Cal Poly Pomona on Friday (9/18) and Cal State San Bernardino (9/20) before returning home on Sept. 25 to host San Francisco State at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
