Trevor Hurst and junior
Ryan Hall scored goals in the first half and the Seawolves added another score in the final 45 minutes to help defeat a tough Cal Poly Pomona team, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Kellogg Field. The Seawolves, ranked No. 10 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) poll, improve to a perfect 5-0-2 record overall and 2-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Broncos fell to 2-4-0 and winless in conference play at 0-3-0.
"This was a great win against a very good team," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We settled in and played very well. We controlled the momentum of the match and we had the best ball movement that I've seen all season long."
Hurst got Sonoma State onto the scoreboard first, at 29:28, despite several scoring chances by Cal Poly Pomona early on. Hall then added the insurance goal in the 39th minute, taking the Seawolves into the intermission with the 2-0 lead.
The Broncos, who outshot the Seawolves in the contest, got in on the scoring, putting one into the net near the end of the match (81:20) to close the Sonoma State lead to just one, at 2-1.
Junior
Brandon de la Cruz put the game away for the Seawolves at 85:29 as Sonoma State escaped the heat to remain unbeaten so far this season, marking one of the best starts since the 2002 season.
Sophomore
Cam Vickers assisted on both Hurst's and De La Cruz's goals and freshmen
Erick Delgado and
Jomed Tejan also handed out assists on Friday.
Cal Poly Pomona got the upper hand in the shot department for the match, 19-11, and outnumbered Sonoma State 9-4 on corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Brook Johnson made five stops for Sonoma State in the victory.
"We kept the pace at a very high level," Ziemer added. "Because of the intense heat, we utilized our bench for most of the match and our rotation kept everyone fresh. This was a great win against a team that, no doubt, will win a lot of games this season."
Sonoma State will wrap up its brief two-match road trip Sunday when they take on Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m. The Seawolves will then return home on Friday to match up with San Francisco State at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
