SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Sonoma State senior
Stuart Gallant converted his second penalty kick this season in the 66th minute, giving the Seawolves a narrow 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at Coyote Premier Field. The Seawolves, ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) poll last week, remain undefeated at 6-0-2 this season and 3-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition. The Coyotes fell to 6-2-0 (2-2-0 CCAA).
"It was a great win for us," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "It was a tough place to play, especially with the heat (98 degrees) we had to play in this afternoon. (Cal State San Bernardino) has a very good team and we were fortunate to get the victory."
Gallant's score at 65:51 gave the Seawolves the lead despite being outshot all afternoon, as the Coyotes led 12-6 in shots, including 7-3 in the final 45 minutes.
Cal State San Bernardino's Albert Cabrera had a excellent scoring opportunity with 16 minutes left in regulation after being fouled in the goal box. His penalty kick sailed just beyond the post, preserving goalkeeper
Brook Johnson's fourth shutout this season. Johnson came up big for the Seawolves once again, making five saves.
"Brook made some huge saves for us," added Ziemer. "He deserves a lot of credit for this win but we held on and gutted this one out."
Six Sonoma State players attempted a shot in the win but it was Gallant's PK conversion that made the difference. Billy Pellow had three shots for the Coyotes. Arath de la Rocha made two saves between the posts for San Bernardino.
With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 14-0-1 against the Coyotes all-time. The tie came in 2003 at San Bernardino.
Sonoma State will return home on Friday to take on San Francisco State, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
