SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Senior
Lindsay Catton converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute but Sonoma State surrendered a goal late in regulation for the second consecutive match and Cal State San Bernardino scored the game winner in double overtime to defeat the Seawolves, 2-1, in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
Sonoma State fell to 3-4-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State San Bernardino improved to 3-1-0 in the CCAA and 4-4-0 overall.
Catton got the Seawolves on the scoreboard early, successfully taking a penalty kick at 10:58 to put Sonoma State up 1-0 early in the match.
For the remainder of the afternoon, both teams battled in the heat and it was the Seawolves who had the slight edge in shots, 11-10. However, the Coyotes' Casey Hirsch found the loose ball at the goalmouth after a corner kick and a scrum in the box to tie the game at one with just 3:23 left in regulation.
"We played a perfect game for 87 minutes," head coach
Luke Oberkirch said. "To give up that one goal off of a corner kick for the tie was crushing."
The Seawolves battled through both overtime periods, managing two shots on goal in the extra time but Coyote goalkeeper Laura Lyons came up big. It was Unity Beddingfield that put a one-timer past SSU netminder
Courtney Grixti after taking a cross from the sideline to give Cal State San Bernardino the 2-1 victory.
Libby Moyer came off the bench to lead all players with four shots and Catton,
Tracy Webster and
Holly Weaver each added two shots in the loss. Grixti made five saves between the posts.
Cal State San Bernardino's Beddingfield led the Coyotes with three shots while Lyons made seven stops.
"We are a good team but this conference is so tough that each game is a one-goal nailbiter," Oberkirch added.
Sonoma State will return home next weekend to take on San Francisco State on Friday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
