Second Half Goals Propel Seawolves To 2-0 Victory

David Holleran helped the Seawolves to victory on Friday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- David Holleran and Taylor Jones came off the bench to score their first goals of the season and No. 8 Sonoma State overwhelmingly outshot San Francisco State 17-1 in the second half alone to defeat the Gators, 2-0, in men's soccer action at the Seawolf Soccer Field on Friday evening. The Seawolves remain unbeaten in 2009, moving to 7-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Gators fell to 4-4-1 (1-3-1 CCAA).

After a first half dominated by San Francisco State, in which the Gators outshot the Seawolves 10-4 before halftime, the match headed into the final 45 minutes at a scoreless tie. Brook Johnson, who notched his fourth shutout this season, made all five saves of the evening in the first half alone.

"We started a little slow and didn't move the ball very well in the first half," head coach Marcus Ziemer said.  "San Francisco State did a good job of picking off our passes and countering on us."

The second half was clearly dominated by Sonoma State, who lead 21-11 in shots for the match (including the aforementioned 17-1 advantage after halftime). Casey Bernard made a pass back to Holleran from near the left post who broke loose from 10 yards out and poked a shot past SFSU goalkeeper Eric Scolman for the 1-0 lead at 60:20. Jones added the insurance goal at 83:50 when he received a pass from Casey Dayton at the exact same spot of the earlier assist by Bernard, to find the back of the net for the eventual 2-0 final.

"We settled in and played our game in the second half, creating a lot of chances offensively," Ziemer added. "Our bench did a good job of coming in and picking up the intensity level. Alan Grady, Bernard, Jones, Erick Delgado and Holleran all came in and really contributed. Our defense was solid and most of the chances were from distance. Johnson, Ryan Hall, Dayton, Stuart Gallant, Ebby Lombardi and Cory Taufer are a solid defensive unit."

Jones had a game-high four shots in the victory, complemented by Ben Langwith who attempted three shots. Scolman, who only saw nine minutes of play before coming into today's match, made five saves for the Gators.

"San Francisco State is a tough rival so this was a good win," said Ziemer. "We need to make sure that we come back ready for Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday."

As mentioned above, the Seawolves will take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
