Catton, McGrew Lead Seawolves To Comeback Win

The Seawolves- and a few fans- celebrate their win on Friday afternoon
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Lindsay Catton scored two goals to bring Sonoma State even before Meghan McGrew scored the game-winner in double overtime on Friday as the Seawolves stunned San Francisco State 3-2 at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park.  The win keeps the Seawolves unbeaten at home (4-0-1) as they go to 4-4-1, 2-2-1 CCAA on the season.  The Gators drop to 3-4-2, 1-3-1 CCAA.

"We showed a lot of heart out there today...that's all I can really say," said Catton after the win. "We've had games like this where we ended up losing, but we were able to dig down today and fight for the victory."

The Seawolves fell behind early and would not score until 74 minutes into the game, when Catton scored the first of her two goals after taking advantage of a loose ball at the goalmouth off a corner.  Ashley Martin was credited with the assist.

The score was tied up in the 84th minute when, after a Gator hand ball in the box set up a Seawolf penalty kick, Catton again stepped up and delivered.  It was the team-high fourth goal of the year for the All-American from Rohnert Park.

The Seawolves and Gators battled through a scoreless first overtime before Sonoma would break through with less than three minutes remaining in the period.  After a pass in from Kiley Brown, freshman Meghan McGrew fired a rocket through the defense that was touched, but not corralled by SF State goalkeeper Annicia Jones.

The score by McGrew, the first of her collegiate career, set off a frenzied celebration on the field.

Though the Gators would end up on the losing side, they did lead for nearly three-quarters of the game.  The first SF State goal came just 5:03 in to the game when Myriah Johnson dribbled in and fired a shot from 20 yards that found the net.

The Gators padded their advantage in the 18th minute when Allyson Freitas headed in a cross from Nicole Vanni.

The Seawolves out shot the Gators 25-15, despite being out shot 6-5 in the first.  Corner kicks were even at eight and the Gators had an 18-11 edge in fouls.

Courtney Grixti played the first 45 minutes in net before giving way to freshman Alexis Sciacqua.  The pair combined for five saves.  Annicia Jones had five saves as well for SF State.

The Seawolves have now gone 14 consecutive home games without a loss, dating back to early September of 2008, compiling a record of 12-0-2 over that span.  Said Catton, "We don't ever want to get out-worked on our home field.  It's a pride issue."

The Seawolves will put their unbeaten home streak on the line this Sunday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay.

Box Score: Sonoma State 3, San Francisco State 2 (2 OT)
