ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State freshman
Casey Bernard scored his first goal of the season in the 16th minute and the Seawolves tacked on three more scores in the final 45 minutes to power eighth-ranked Sonoma State to a 4-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves continue their unbeaten streak, moving to 8-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the CCAA. The Otters fell to 1-6-2 (1-3-2 CCAA).
"This was a good team effort," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We changed the starting lineup and gave some different guys a chance and they stepped up and crated a lot of chances."
Bernard took a rebound of a
David Holleran shot that bounced off the crossbar and found the left net for the early 1-0 Seawolves lead. Sonoma State dominated throughout the afternoon, outshooting Cal State Monterey Bay 19-7 in the match, including a 10-4 advantage before halftime.
"I thought that we should have scored a couple more goals in the first half and buried them," added Ziemer.
In the second half, senior
Alan Grady found the net at 51:20 after taking a rebound off a
Taylor Jones' shot to put the Seawolves up 2-0. Jones then added a score of his own at 68:15 when he took a pass from Grady while running in behind the Otter defense. Junior
Ryan Hall then capped off the scoring of the afternoon when he headed a pass from freshman
Brian Angel for the eventual 4-0 score in favor of Sonoma State.
"(Monterey Bay) came out in the second half only down one goal and they fought hard because they were still in the game," said Ziemer. "When we scored the second and third goals, it took a lot out of them. We have a lot of different guys who can score goals and we have a lot of guys who are capable of starting depending on the game. Our depth is a big advantage."
Senior goalkeeper
Brook Johnson notched his fifth shutout of the season on Sunday, including three straight matches with a shutout, as the Seawolves have outscored their opponents 7-0 over that span. He made four saves in the winning effort. His counterpart, CSUMB's Brenden Baca, made five stops.
"Our back line has been solid defensively and they also are excellent in buildup," Ziemer said. "They help initiate our attack."
Jones led the Seawolf offense with four shots, as Grady, sophomore
Trevor Hurst and junior
Brandon de la Cruz added three shots.
Sonoma State will take its unbeaten record and national ranking on the road to take on UC San Diego on Friday at La Jolla. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
