ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Junior
Allison Kern scored the first two goals of her collegiate career on Saturday, but it would not be enough to put Sonoma State in the win column as the Seawolves had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA action in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves, playing in their fourth double overtime game in their last five outings, see their record evened out at 4-4-2, 2-2-2 CCAA. The Otters go to 2-6-2, 1-4-1 CCAA.
The Seawolves started the scoring early when Kern, playing up from her usual defensive position, slipped behind the defense and was fed a pass from
Katie Parucha. Kern was able to finish and within the first six minutes of the game, the Seawolves held a 1-0 lead.
Their lead, however, would be short-lived as the Otters drew even in the 10th minute when Marlina Massagli nailed a shot off the crossbar and down into the goal off a cross from Krysta Vukas.
Cal State Monterey Bay would capture the lead in the 28th minute after Annie Schlimmer was able to rebound a shot from Sarah Alderson and punch it in from a short distance.
Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Seawolves turned up the pressure in the second and their efforts would be rewarded when, in the 55th minute, Kern found her second goal of the game. This one came off a pass from
Sara Studer and the resulting 1-v-1 with the goalkeeper brought things even again.
Both teams had opportunities to break the stalemate, but strong goalkeeping and opportunistic defenses kept the ball from finding net.
For the second consecutive game, head coach Luke Oberkirch made a goalkeeper switch at the half with
Courtney Grixti giving way to freshman
Alexis Sciacqua. Sciacqua made two saves and extended her scoreless streak to 128 minutes.
Andrea Davis played the whole game in goal for the Otters, making nine saves.
Sonoma State held a decisive 20-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 mark in the first half. It just happened that two of the Otters' four first half shots went in the net.
The Otters led 4-3 in corner kicks and committed six less fouls than the Seawolves (12-6).
The Seawolves are back out on the road next weekend when they will take on UC San Diego (Fri.) and Cal State East Bay (Sat.)
