Gallant Converts Penalty Kick, Seawolves Win in 2OT

Stuart Gallant and the Seawolves prevailed on Friday night.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Senior Stuart Gallant converted a penalty kick in the 106th minute, capping off a double-overtime thriller that No. 12 Sonoma State seemed to dominate from the beginning, as the Seawolves escaped with the 2-1 victory on Friday evening at the Seawolf Soccer Field to remain undefeated at 2-0-1. Grand Canyon, who entered the match ranked No. 22 in the nation, fell to 1-1-0.

"We played very well and controlled most of the game," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "But we need to create more chances and take better advantage of the ones that we create. Grand Canyon always battles and we have had some classic games with them. This is another one for the books."

Gallant's score at 105:08 finished what was a very intense match between two very talented teams but the Seawolves peppered Grand Canyon's Ben Paneccasio all evening long, outshooting the Antelopes 25-7, including a 6-0 advantage in the two extra periods.

Ben Langwith found the net in the 15th minute for Sonoma State after taking a cross passes from Cory Taufer and Trevor Hurst for his second goal of the season, putting the Seawolves up 1-0 at halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Antelopes' Kyle Ciliento poked a shot up and over Seawolves goalkeeper Brook johnson to knot the score at one.

""The goal was unfortunate because (defender) Casey Dayton dropped to cover Brook (Johnson) and the ball hit a bump and took a bad bounce past (Dayton)," Ziemer explained.

Both teams battled but Sonoma State dominated on the offensive end as neither team couldn't quite find net.

Gallant's goal in double-overtime ended a foul-plagued marathon that saw 41 total fouls (21 on Sonoma State) and eight yellow cards (six against the Seawolves).

Nine Sonoma State players had at least two shots in the match as 14 of the Seawolves' 25 shots were on goal. Paneccasio made 10 saves for the Antelopes. Trevor Hurst led all players with five shots (four on goal) and Gallant added four.

"We keep getting better each game," Ziemer added. "We have a lot of competition for every (position) so the players know that they have bring it every time they step on the field. We lost a lot of players last year, but these guys are really playing well and keeping the Sonoma State tradition going. We will enjoy this one for a night and then it is back to work tomorrow to prepare for Sunday."

Sonoma State will return to the pitch at 2 p.m. Sunday to take on Notre Dame de Namur in the final game of the Seawolf Classic. The Argonauts fell in a heartbreaker to UC San Diego earlier in the day, 2-1.

UC San Diego and Grand Canyon will faceoff at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
