Will Olsem led Sonoma State in scoring for the fourth time in the last five games, netting 21 points en route to a convincing 78-66 victory over the visiting Tritons of UC San Diego on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 5-12 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. The Tritons fall to 4-10 and 3-8.
Both teams stayed relatively close to each other in the opening minutes of the first half and UC San Diego held a slight four point lead at 16-12 in seven minutes of play. However, Sonoma State would go on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to open up a huge eight point advantage at 26-18. A free throw by UCSD's Jordan Lawley closed the gap to five points at 35-30, but that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the half as the Seawolves took a 38-32 lead into halftime.
The Tritons then went on a 8-2 run to open up the second half to tie the ballgame at 40-40 with 18 minutes to play. The two teams knotted the score four more times before the Seawolves started to pull away for good on a fast break dunk by freshman
Patrick Scott with 9:51 remaining to give SSU the 51-49 lead. The Tritons kept things close, though, coming to within one point one more time before the Seawolves ran away with the 12 point victory.
Olsem led the Seawolves with 21 points, the fourth time this season he has led the team in scoring. Freshman
Sterling Arterberry added 12 for the Seawolves. Sophomore
Steven Pratt and senior
Chad Chambers dumped in nine points in the victory. The team hit half of its shots (22-44) and was 72.5 from the free throw line (29-40).
For UC San Diego, Lawley dropped in a game-high 28 points, but was the only Triton in double-figures on Saturday.
Sonoma State will travel south next weekend for a pair of tough games in Cal State L.A. (Friday) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Saturday). Both games will tip off at 7:30 p.m. The Seawolves will then return home the following weekend (Feb. 4) to open up their last homestand of the season with a game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
