Jaclyn Bisordi led Sonoma State offensively for the third consecutive game, but the Seawolves could not hold on to a halftime lead as Cal State Monterey Bay pulled away in the final 20 minutes to take the 58-49 victory on Sunday night at The Kelp Bed in Seaside. Sonoma State evened its conference record at 3-3 (5-6 overall) as Cal State Monterey Bay rose to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA.
The Otters scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer by Veronica Williams but for the next 13 minutes, neither team would lead by more than two points at any given time. It wasn't until 4:50 remaining in the opening half that a jumper by freshman
Kelsey Wagner gave the Seawolves a three-point lead at 15-12. Bisordi then extended the Sonoma State lead to six (18-12) a minute later.
At halftime, the Seawolves led the Otters, 20-16, after shooting 38.1 percent from the floor on 8-of-21 shooting from the floor. SSU held CSUMB to just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) in the opening half.
It was much of the same at the beginning of the second half for both teams, as neither team took a lead larger than two points until the Otters took a four-point lead on a three-ball by Helen Suarez at 14:23 remaining. Sophomore
Christy Shreve answered back on the next time down the floor with a second-chance layup but Cal State Monterey Bay extended its lead to as much as 12 points at 46-32 with eight minutes remaining.
The Otters held off any Sonoma State attempt at making a run to close the gap and pulled ahead by 14 points, their largest lead of the game at 54-40 with just two minutes left. The Seawolves closed the Otter lead to nine points but that would be as far as they would get, falling to CSUMB 58-49.
Bisordi's 12 and junior
Oly Larkin's 10 points led the Seawolves on Sunday. Shreve pulled down seven rebounds and added seven points as well. Sophomore
Roxanne Rentschler handed out four assists in the loss.
Suarez had 16 points to lead all scorers and Julie Heurung added 10 for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Sonoma State will hit the road again on Friday to take on Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m. The Seawolves will then travel to San Bernardino to take on the Coyotes on Saturday before returning home on Jan 14 to host Cal State Stanislaus at The Wolves' Den.
