Varnadore, Hurst Lead Seawolves To Win Over Otters

Trevor Hurst scored his sixth goal of the season on Friday.
Box Score: Sonoma State 2, Cal State Monterey Bay 0

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- They aren't the team's leading scorers for nothing. And, on Friday afternoon, they delivered again. Taylor Varnadore and Trevor Hurst each scored a goal, their sixth of the season, to put Sonoma State back in the win column after a 2-0 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay. The win puts the Seawolves at 6-3-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the CCAA. The Otters remain winless this season, falling to 0-6-2 and 0-5-2.

"I thought we did what we needed to earn the win, but we need to be a lot sharper on Sunday (against San Francisco State)," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "We could have scored several more goals, but Cal State Monterey Bay's goalkeeper (Sam Campanelli) made some big time saves."

Varnadore and Cam Vickers hooked up at 15:31 just as they have all season long -- a chip shot from Vickers on the right side of the field that cleared everybody but the 6-foot-3 freshman, who got his head up and sent it to the back of the net.

The Seawolves allowed just one shot by the Otters through the opening 45 minutes while firing 13 shots of their own. SSU eventually dominated that stat category as it has all season, 26-3.

In the second half, Hurst gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead on a nice goal off a free kick from about 25 yards out for his sixth of the season. The defense continued the stymie the Otter offense all afternoon, securing the third shutout of the season. Juan Sosa made one save in goal for SSU.

"We were missing a couple of defenders, so we moved (David) Holleran to central defender and he played very well," Ziemer added. "Erick Delgado had a great game on the wing. He was very active and his transition to defense when we lost the ball was incredible."

Sonoma State will take on San Francisco State on Sunday. The Seawolves and Gators kick off at 2 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field, kicking off Homecoming Week at SSU.

Ziemer ended by saying, "(San Francisco State) is a big rivalry, so we need to make sure that we are ready."
