CARSON, Calif- Sonoma State managed just six shots on Sunday afternoon and Cal State Dominguez Hills scored three goals, two in the final 12 minutes of the match to give the Toros a convincing 3-0 victory over the Seawolves at Toro Stadium. With the loss, Sonoma State remains in third place, just a point behind Cal State Stanislaus with a 6-5-1 record in conference play (8-5-1 overall).
Chico State extended its lead over Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State with a 3-1 win on Sunday. The Wildcats (24 points) are now four points ahead of the Warriors (20) and five ahead of the Seawolves (19) with four matches left to play in the regular season. The top four teams in the enitre conference will qualify for the CCAA tournament at Turlock on Nov. 5-7 with the winners of each division earning an automatic bid.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored its first goal of the afternoon just 12 minutes into the contest on a free kick by Alex Munoz. The rest of the opening half would seem to go back and forth, but the Toros held a 6-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, the Seawolves were able to hold the Toros off, despite a 7-2 disadvantage in shots, but CSUDH gave itself a two-goal cushion with under 12 minutes to play on an Andre Turoldo goal at 78:43. Seven minutes later, at 85:45, the Toros put the game out of reach on a score by Jordan Rover.
The Seawolves surrendered 13 shots as goalkeeper
Juan Sosa made a season-high five saves in the losing effort. SSU couldn't get much going on offense, firing a season-low six shots, two of which came off the foot of
Taylor Varnadore.
The win by the Toros extends their unbeaten streak over the Seawolves to eight, dating back to 2007, including a four game win streak -- SSU hasn't beaten CSUDH at Carson since 2002.
Sonoma State will play a home-and-home series with its travel partner, Humboldt State, beginning with a match at Arcata on Friday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves and Lumberjacks will then return to Rohnert Park on Sunday with kick off set for 2 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
