Box Score: Sonoma State 4, Humboldt State 0
ARCATA, Calif-
Trevor Hurst tallied his team-high ninth goal of the year and three of his teammates would follow as Sonoma State rolled to a dominating 4-0 win over Humboldt State on a wet Friday afternoon in Arcata. The Seawolves improve to 9-5-1, 7-5-1 CCAA while the Lumberjacks stumble to 3-9-3, 3-8-2 CCAA.
Said head coach
Marcus Ziemer, "We played really well today. We kept the ball and controlled most of the game. We played everybody and the guys that came in did very well."
Playing on the 'Jacks brand new field, Hurst will go down in history as the first male player to score a goal. His opening strike came in the 25th minute as he took a centering pass and glanced it off the post and in.
Taylor Varnadore and
Nico Spann were credited with assists on the play.
While the Seawolves would dominate play throughout the first half, leading 15-2 in shots, they would not be able to add another score before the whistle. The second half, however, would not be so kind to the Lumberjack defense.
Freshman defender
Trevor Tennant opened up his collegiate account with a goal in the 61st minute as he picked up a loose ball in the box and blasted it to the upper left corner.
The lead would stay at 2-0 for just under eight minutes, when senior forward
Brandon Dela Cruz posted his first goal of the season when he finished to the far post off a pass from
Cam Vickers. The assist for Vickers was his CCAA-leading ninth of the year and the 28th of his career. He is now just five back of Eric Lafon's school record of 33.
Sophomore
Erick Delgado scored the capper in the 85th minute when he gathered a loose ball and sent it inside the far post. It was Delgado's second goal of the season.
Though he didn't appear on the scoring chart, sophomore
Jomed Tejan was singled out by Ziemer for his fine play, "Jomed had what could have been his best game as a Seawolf. He rarely lost the ball and was tough on defense."
The Seawolves would lead the 'Jacks in shots (26-4) and corner kicks (6-0). Goalkeeper
Juan Sosa needed to make just one save in securing his fourth shutout of the campaign.
Sonoma is now unbeaten against Humboldt in its last 17 meetings (13-0-4), dating back to 1996.
The Seawolves and Lumberjacks will now head south to square off on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. It will be Senior Day and the Seawolves' four seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
"We can enjoy this win tonight," said Ziemer, "but we need to bounce back and play Humboldt again on Sunday. We have a lot of respect for them and know that they will be ready to mix it up."
