Box Score: Sonoma State 3, Humboldt State 0

SANTA ROSA, Calif- Senior Brandon Dela Cruz gave Sonoma State the 1-0 lead early in the second half and Kelly Davila and Trevor Hurst netted goals within 20 seconds of each other as the Seawolves snatched a 3-0 victory over Humboldt State on Senior Day at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. The Seawolves secured their seventh consecutive 10-win season, improving to 10-5-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the CCAA.

It was great to honor the seniors with a win," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "This is the fifth year for Ryan Hall, David Holleran and Dela Cruz and Juan Sosa's third and they are all key players for us."

After a back and forth first half, both teams were unable to find the net despite 13 combined shots. Sonoma State led with eight shots, though, after the opening 45 minutes of play.

"The first half was tough," Ziemer added. "Humboldt State has a great coach and we knew that he would make some adjustments after Friday's game and he did."

The Seawolves potent offense finally broke through at 68:30 when Dela Cruz took possession of passes from Hurst and Davila and punched it into the net for the 1-0 lead.

"Our first goal was really nice," said Ziemer. "Hurst played the ball in Davila and he controlled it. Davila then dropped a nice pass back to Deal Cruz who buried it."

Ten minutes later, Davila headed in a cross from Nico Spann on the far side for the comfortable 2-0 advantage. Just as the Seawolf bench finished celebrating Davila's score, Hurst put the game out of reach for good, adding his team-leading 10th goal of the season just 20 seconds later, putting Sonoma State up 3-0.

Sosa made five saves in his shutout effort, playing in his final home game as a Seawolf. He faced nine Lumberjack shots on Sunday, as his counterpart, Humboldt State's Kyle Verle saw 17 SSU shots, saving six of them.

Ziemer explained, "We are just focusing on one game at a time and not worrying about the other results in the conference. If we can win out last two games, then we are in a position to qualify for the CCAA and NCAA tournaments."

With two matches remaining in the 2010 regular season, Sonoma State (25 points) trails second place Cal State Stanislaus (26) by one point in the CCAA North Division Standings. Chico State remains in first place with 27 points, but the Wildcats' match against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday was rescheduled for Monday due to rain in Chico.

The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the CCAA tournament with the winners of the North and South Divisions earning automatic bids.
