Gators Breakthrough With Late Goal, Defeat Sonoma

Taylor Varnadore and the Seawolves were held scoreless on Sunday.
Box Score: San Francisco State 1, Sonoma State 0

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State and San Francisco State battled through 83 minutes of scoreless soccer before the Gators' Adam Nowak punched the ball into the net with six minutes remaining in regulation, spoiling the homecoming game for the Seawolves on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field. With the 1-0 loss, SSU falls even in conference play at 4-4-0 and 6-4-0 overall. The Gators improve to 5-4-1 and 3-4-1.

"That was a tough loss," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "We controlled the play, but didn't create as many chances as usual. You have to give (San Francisco State) credit because they defended well as a team."

The Seawolves held an advantage in shots through the opening period, attemping seven to the Gators' five. Each statistical category was nearly even, including corner kicks (1-1) and saves (2-2).

The play would go back and forth in the second half, but San Francisco State controlled the ball offensively for the majority of the period, outshooting Sonoma State 6-3. At 83:57, Joseph Flores passed the ball across the face of the goal where Nowak took control and blasted it home, beyond the reach of SSU netminder Juan Sosa.

Erick Delgado accounted for three of the Seawolves' 10 shots on the afternoon as the high-powered Sonoma State offense was held in check. It was just the second time all season an opponent outshot SSU.

"I thought that we were a little too patient," Ziemer added. "We needed to attack with more urgency. We lost a chance to make up some valuable ground (today) since both Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus lost. This has been a crazy year in conference play so far."

Sonoma State will take on rival Chico State on Friday as kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
