TURLOCK, Calif- For the second time in three seasons, the Sonoma State men's soccer is the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Champions. Junior
Cam Vickers scored just 1:36 into the second half and the Sonoma State defense came up huge to earn the 1-0 shutout victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The Seawolves improve to 14-5-1 this season.
The Toros (14-5-2), who came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed, took control for most of the first half, outshooting the Seawolves 6-2 and holding a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks. SSU goalkeeper
Juan Sosa, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, needed to make two saves in the match, one of which came in the first half.

Marcus Ziemer, "Our defense was incredible today. Hall, Honaker, Lombardi, and Tennant were solid for us and Sosa made some huge saves."
On the first scoring opportunity of the second half, Sonoma State didn't miss. Junior
Trevor Hurst fought off two defenders on the far post and punched the ball across the face of the goal where Vickers slid in and finished into the net for the 1-0 lead at 46:36. Vickers was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player for scoring the game-winner on Sunday and recording his 12th assist of the season in Friday's victory over top-seeded Cal State San Bernardino.
Cal State Dominguez Hills dominated for most of the second half as well, firing 13 shots to Sonoma State's four attempts (19-6 in the contest). The Toros had several great attempts at evening the score, as two of the shots ricochet off the post. However, the Seawolves were able to hold the conference's highest scoring team off the scoreboard to capture the 2010 CCAA title.
"Dominguez Hills is very good...and after we scored, they really picked it up. The last few minutes were pretty scary," said Ziemer.
ZIemer continued in his praise for his team, "I thought we fought hard, but kept our composure. It was a very physical match. We have a huge rivalry (with CSUDH) and it's always a battle against them."
It was fourth straight year that Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills faced each other in the title match with the Seawolves last winning the title in 2008. SSU is now 8-7-1 in the 12-year history of the conference tournament and has won the title three times (2005, 2008 and 2010).
Sonoma State will now await word on their NCAA postseason fate as the 32-team field is expected to be announced on Monday afternoon. The top four teams in the west region will advance to the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship FIrst Round next weekend at a site yet to be determined.
"It's always tough to win a CCAA championship...but we did it," said Ziemer, "We had great fan support... there were over 25 alumni in the stands and a lot of family friends. Thanks to all of them!"
"We're going to enjoy this one for tonight...this should put us in the NCAA Tournament," concluded Ziemer, "Now the important part of the season starts."
