Cam Vickers scored in the 73rd minute and Sonoma State outshot the visiting Saint Mary's Gaels, 16-13, but the Seawolves came up short, losing 4-1 in their last exhibition match before the regular season starts on Sept. 4 at Fresno Pacific.
"This was a good wake up call for us after we played so well down at Stanford last week," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We are able to see where we are as a team and we know what we need to fix before we get the regular season started."
Saint Mary's, a Division I school and a member of the West Coast Conference, drew first blood in the 25th minute after a nice cross from Justin Grider that found Emmanuel Sarabia, who headed the ball past
Juan Sosa to the left side of the net. The Gaels added two unassisted goals before halftime to take the 3-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.
Before Vickers obtained a pass from
Brandon Dela Cruz and put it in the net at 72:19 for the Seawolves' only goal of the match, Saint Mary's added to their lead with a breakaway score by Joel Fumia at 59:07, giving the Gaels their fourth and final goal of the evening.
After each team fired six shots in the first half, Sonoma State led in shots in the second half with a 5-4 margin. Despite the 4-1 score in favor of Saint Mary's at the end of regulation, the teams played an extra 20 minutes and still, the Seawolves had an advantage in shots, 5-3, but could not convert. Vickers had five of Sonoma State's 16 shots in the match.
All three SSU goalkeepers made an appearance between the posts, but Sosa led with four saves.
Ryan Smitchger made one save.
The Seawolves will now enter regular season play when they travel to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific on Sept. 4. After a home match against Dominican on Sept. 7 at 5 p.m., Sonoma State will kick off conference play by hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
Box Score: Saint Mary's (CA) 4, Sonoma State 1
