Box Score: Sonoma State 0, Cal Poly Pomona 0 (2 ot)
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite playing with only 10 players on the field due an ejection early in the second half, the Sonoma State women's soccer team held its ground and forced visiting Cal Poly Pomona to a scoreless draw on opening day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule. Each team earned a point with the tie as the Seawolves went to 1-0-1. The Broncos sport a 2-0-1 record overall.
"I thought it was a great performance by our girls today," head coach
Luke Oberkirch said. "Obviously, being down a player for almost an hour, it was tough, but we played great. It was a great effort and to come away with a point, it was a great result for us."
The Seawolves controlled most of the ball in the first half, outshooting the Broncos 8-1 and holding the advantage in corners at 3-0 in the opening 45 minutes of the match.
In the second half, junior
Taylor Colacion was awarded a straight red card in the 49th minute, causing SSU to play with just 10 players on the field the rest of the way. As a result, Cal Poly Pomona was able to move the ball around, firing eight shots to Sonoma State's three. Seawolves' goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti came up big, stopping three CPP shots to keep the game at zeroes.
In the two overtime periods, each team only attempted two shots -- both of which came from Bronco uniforms.
Grixti recorded her first shutout of the season, as her counterpart, Cal Poly Pomona's Sarah Rohman did the same, but with five saves. Colacion had a team-high four shots and teammate
Katie Parucha added three of SSU's 11 shots. The Broncos were led by the four shots of Jennifer Rivera.
Sonoma State will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
