Box Score: Sonoma State 0, #25 UC San Diego 0 (2 OT)
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State again struggled to find the back of the net despite seven of its 16 shots being on goal, but the Seawolves held strong defensively, forcing a scoreless draw against 25th-ranked UC San Diego on Sunday at a wet and slippery Seawolf Soccer Field. With the tie, it was the first time in program history that Sonoma State earned a point in competition with the Tritons, as UCSD came into the match undefeated against SSU, 14-0-0.
Sonoma State (1-2-2, 0-2-2 CCAA) dominated the offensive end of the field early in the first half, as 11 of its 12 first half shots came just 24 minutes into the contest. The Seawolves led 12-3 in the shot department in the opening half.
The game went back and forth the rest of the way, but UC San Diego (3-2-1, 1-2-1 CCAA) held an advantage in shots, 9-4, for the final 65 minutes. However, neither team converted and the game ended after the second overtime with 0-0 on the scoreboard.
UCSD's Kristin Armstrong stayed busy between the posts, making seven saves. Her counterpart, Sonoma State's
Courtney Grixti earned her second shutout of the season while making four saves on 12 Trition shots.
The Seawolves have now gone over 400 minutes without scoring a goal (400:26) -- the last time SSU found the net was back on Sept. 2 when
Taylor Colacion netted the game-winner against Western Oregon with just 26 seconds remaining in the match.
Looking for its first conference victory, Sonoma State will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus at Warrior Stadium. Kick off is set for 4:30 p.m.
