Box Score: #20 Chico State 2, #23 Sonoma State 0

CHICO, Calif- Chico State's Ferid Celosmanovic scored two goals, his team-leading fifth and sixth of the season, and goalkeeper James Stroud held Sonoma State's high powered offense off the scoreboard, as the Wildcats defeated the Seawolves 2-0 in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops No. 23 Sonoma State to 5-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the CCAA and No. 20 Chico State holds strong at the top of the North Division at 5-1-0 in conference play (7-1-0 overall).

For the first time this season, Sonoma State was outshot by its opponent, mustering just seven shots on the day, one of which came on goal. The Seawolves came into the match averaging 18.9 attempts per match.

"Chico State is a good team and difficult to play against," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "They finished their chances well and we didn't."

Celosmanovic got the Wildcats on the scoreboard just nine minutes into the contest on a nice chip shot from 15 yards out that got up and over Sonoma State goalkeeper Juan Sosa. Both teams fell even at halftime in shots, 4-4, although Chico State led 1-0 after the opening 45 minutes. Celosmanovic put his second score in the net, just under five minutes into the second half, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 cushion with plenty of time to play.

However, the Seawolves just got three shots off in the final half and was unable to find the back of the net, suffering their second consecutive loss.

Chico State snapped a 12-match unbeaten streak against Sonoma State with the victory. The last time the Seawolves lost to the Wildcats was back in 2003.

"Friday's loss (against Cal State Stanislaus) was a tough one," Ziemer added. "Everybody played except for our backup keeper, but we couldn't make it happen. We are going to work hard this week and get our 'mojo' back."

Sonoma State will return home for its next four matches, beginning with a match on Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 4 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field, kicking off homecoming festivities.
